A major advantage of Hereford cow is that the race is very tough. In winter (cold) and summer (hot) temperature the can stay outside between the trees. In Canada calving Herefords at more than 20 degrees below zero outside into the snow, without causing problems for mother or child. It is therefore not need to have expensive facilities for stable etc.. there is no manure storage problems. This breed is often used for natural grazing projects.
Herefords calve off smoothly. The calves at birth have a low birth weight, generally between 30 and 40 kilograms. In combination with a fine bone structure, this leads to births, with human assistance can be omitted completely.
Hereford mothers gives seven months guarantee good milk to their calves for a good start growth. Typically when weaning at the age of 200 days to reach a weight of about 270 kg for steers and about 245 kg for heifers.
Health problems hardly exists. The veterinarian is an occasional guest on Hereford companies. The use of antibiotics is not needed.
In short, a high percentage of live-born calves per year, low management and investment and a cheap feed ration lead to many and good quality and tasty meat, this is especially appreciated by the customers of the Hereford Breeders. But above all it's a pretty sweet cow!
